Abstract

The first part of this study is about the institutional aspects of the chapter, the life of this ecclesiastic community, the way it operated, the hierarchies between its members and their various duties. The second part is composed of 851 biographical notes of the canons and dignitaries between 1200 and 1500. This study has managed to put forward that the latter maintained the reality of a religious community through the last centuries of the middle ages, and that despite the division of the capitular mensa into individual prebends, the desertion of the refectory and the settling in private houses. Indeed, the members of the chapter received equal income, all the residing canons participated in the collation of benefits and presided the chapter meetings. Applying the 816 Rule of Aix, the chapter proved very strict with its members, and most of the capitular statutes insisted on the notions of residing and assisting. This firm attitude along with the low income generated by prebends as well as the capacity of the chapter to resist interventions from the Holy See partly explain why the cathedral of Verdun recruited people from a rather local and socially humble background. The chapter was mainly made up of clerics recruited in the diocese of Verdun, or from dioceses in the ecclesiastic provinces of Treves/Trier and Reims, who were canons from humble backgrounds, even if some of them came from noble families with a limited influence.
